Childhood Pastime Brings This Pennsylvania Man Fame, Many Admirers
Kurt Steiner, an Erie native also known as “The Mountain Man,” went from skipping stones as a childhood pastime to becoming one of the greatest stone-skippers of all time, writes Jason Nark for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Becoming famous for his skill was not always easy for the private man.
“When I started skipping rocks, it was a private thing for me,” Steiner said. “But when I got good, people started sticking cameras in front of me and wanted me to stand up and talk to people and, yeah, that was really hard for a while.”
Today, Steiner is revered among the small corps of stone-skippers who have turned the pastime into a competitive hobby, and there is a good reason for it.
Six years ago, Steiner ensured a place for himself in The Guinness Book of World Records by skipping a stone 88 times on one throw. Beating the previous record of 65 skips took a full year of preparation.
The skipper isn’t quite sure he would be able to repeat that feat today.
“I can’t throw anymore the way that I did for that throw,” he said.
