Thorndale Resident’s Barbecue Sauce Makes a Tasty Impression, Earns Him a Small Business Award

By

Thorndale resident Cass Rowland has combined the taste of the South with the taste of the North to create an award-winning barbecue sauce that has been catching fire in our area.

Already selling in four area Walmart stores, Rowland has just inked an agreement with Giant Foods to offer his Big Boize BBQ Sauce in 62 Giant supermarkets.

“I proclaim it to be the one sauce with two flavors,” said Rowland. “It’s got one flavor when it’s hot, and another flavor when it’s not.”

Rowland, who benefited from the counseling and mentoring services offered by SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties, was one of six winners of the organization’s Small Business Achievement Award. SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties – which provides free professional business counseling to local entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofits – recently hosted its ninth annual awards luncheon at the Concord Country Club.

Rooted in New London Township and Thom’s Jerky in Exton were also recognized, as were the following Delco-based businesses:

  • Karite Naturals LLC (Springfield)
  • River Avenue Digital LLC (Media)
  • Julie Sebastian Softball and Fitness Instruction (Newtown Square)

Elected officials on the federal, state, and local levels, as well as educational, community, and business leaders from both counties, were present at the highly regarded event to congratulate the award winners and to recognize SCORE for its valuable contributions to the small business community.

With a tireless work ethic, Rowland has personally demonstrated his sauce in specialty stores, supermarkets, trade shows, and area food fairs, all while maintaining his day job as a carpenter in the Coatesville Area School District. He’s also Associate Pastor at the Main Line Christian Assembly in Malvern.

Although Rowland founded Big Boize BBQ Sauce just three years ago, its rapid growth prompted him to seek help from SCORE. His SCORE mentors, Rich Gauger and John Ponticello, have been advising Rowland on operations, retail sales, and financing.

As Rowland seeks to secure financing to expand his operation, he continues to genially demonstrate and sell his sauce.
