State Rep. Houlahan on Sikorsky Plant Closure: ‘There Are Some Questions That Need Answering’

By

Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan is looking for answers on why Lockheed Martin plans to close the Sikorsky helicopter plant outside Coatesville, writes Donna Rovins for the Daily Local News.

Houlahan, who represents Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District, which includes all of Chester County, has introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. This covers a number of laws that cover, among other things, the Department of Defense’s annual budget and expenditures.

The amendment relates to the proposed closure of the Coatesville plant and existing military contracts with the company. It would require the Secretary of the Navy to assess “the status of the VH–92A helicopter program industrial base and the potential impact of proposed manufacturing base changes on the acquisition program.”

“There are some questions that need answering before we allow the budget to be passed along to them,” Houlahan said.

Houlahan, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said that the amendment requests that the Secretary of the Navy submit a report. This should assess the program, the plant, why the decision was made, what will be the impact in moving, and the effect it will have on the supply chain and manufacturing base.
