Devon resident Kemp Littlepage has been named a Carnegie Hero for helping rescue a trapped driver whose car had plunged into a pond in Wayne last year, according to a report from The Middletown (Conn.) Press.

The 70-year-old Littlepage was one of 18 civilians who were awarded a medal by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission “for risking their lives while trying to save others from perilous, life-threatening situations.”

Littlepage was driving in Wayne when he saw a man suffer a seizure and lose control of his vehicle. The retired real estate developer saw the car swerve into a nearby lake with the unconscious driver still behind the wheel.

“I realized it was a life-or-death situation,” said Littlepage. “I had to get in the water.”

He swam to the car that already had its front end completely submerged. He then reached through the open driver’s window to unclasp the seat belt and held King’s head above water.

By then, two more men had reached the vehicle and managed to open the passenger door. Littlepage pushed King toward the men who grabbed him and pulled him to shore.
