Va La Vineyards in Avondale, one of the top wineries in the nation, is seeing its flagship red blend, Mahogany, turn 12 this year, writes Paul Vigna for the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

Mahogany is a mix of northern Italian varieties such as Barbera, Malvasia Nera, Charbono, Petit Verdot, Carmine, Teroldego, Lagrein, and Sagrantino. It offers bold notes and mouth-filling flavors that make it easily memorable with its dark fruit flavors and velvety texture. There are also hints of dark chocolate and spice, along with smoky-earthy notes.

According to its creator, winemaker Anthony Vietri, Mahogany was only supposed to be a working name to distinguish it from the other tree wine concepts he was working on at the time, but it stuck.

“The name Mahogany referenced both the black soils that the wine is grown in and the color of the finished wine that they produce,” said Vietri.

The winery has just released 113 cases of the newest Mahogany, 2016 Batch 1 vintage. It has an aging window that will put it at its peak between 2024 and 2029 and sells for $48 a bottle.
