One of the oldest Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) events for girls in the country – the 19th annual Girls Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology – hosted more than 1,000 girls on Saturday afternoon at Phoenixville Area Middle School, writes Diane Mastrull for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Presented by the Chester County Economic Development Council through its Innovative Technology Action Group initiative, the event was first created as a response to the under-representation of young women in STEM careers. (While Philadelphia is among the best cities for women in technology, there are still two men for every one woman in the field.)

Girls Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology (GETT) began when a Sikorsky helicopter piloted by Kim Barwick made a dramatic entrance.

Robotics, coding, video gaming, and forensic sciences were among the 85 activities in STEM fields that were available to girls in grades 5-10 at this year’s event, which also included a discussion involving more than 50 female senior executives from business, government, and education.
