Marrying Downingtown Mayor Josh Maxwell has created some interesting conundrums for Blair Thornburgh, writes the newly minted political wife in an essay for The University of Chicago Magazine.

Thornburgh describes herself as the World’s Least Likely Political Wife. In part due to her colorfully dyed hair and habit of wearing a black t-shirt with FEMINIST in bold letters on the front. Having a degree in medieval studies has also not helped.

While not fitting into the world of politics, she is at least familiar with it. Her grandfather, Dick Thornburgh, was governor of Pennsylvania and then U.S. attorney general. Although her grandfather was a Republican, her husband is a progressive Democrat, a fact she believes raises a number of eyebrows.

Thornburgh has also discovered that being a politician’s wife comes with both an upside and downside.

Ribbon cuttings, parades, and fire department chicken barbecues are all fun, but she less enjoys getting lectured at a cocktail party about the town’s parking situation.

“It is fun, and exhausting, and oddly glamorous, exhilarating, and emotionally taxing,” she writes. “But in the end, it is my choice.”
