Exton resident Kyle Bryant has written a book on his bike ride across America to raise awareness of Friedreich’s ataxia, the rare disease he was diagnosed with as a teen, writes Mary Clare Fischer for Philadelphia magazine.

Bryant discovered he had the disease, which gradually damages muscle coordination, at just 17. While struggling to accept his terminal diagnosis, he read about a man with multiple sclerosis who had ridden a trike across America.

Two decades ago, he bought his own trike and convinced his parents to accompany him on his 2,500-mile ride from California to Tennessee for the next meeting of the National Ataxia Foundation.

Today, Bryant is 37, has founded RideAtaxia, a network of bike rides that raise money for research, and co-hosts the Two Disabled Dudes podcast.

His book is titled Shifting into High Gear: One Man’s Grave Diagnosis and the Epic Bike Ride That Taught Him What Matters.

“I thought I could help my story and that story specifically live longer if I could write it down,” said Bryant.
