After struggling with mental health issues and addiction after leaving the Army, veteran and Immaculata University student Jonathan Bittner has found new purpose in education and work, according to a report from Immaculata News.

Bittner is currently enrolled in Immaculata’s College of Adult Professional Studies and is available 24/7 on the Operation Ward 57 crisis hotline to help distraught veterans.

Bittner was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007, where he suffered an injury that sent him back home and out of the Army. His transition back to civilian life was made more difficult by post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, his visit to a psychologist was an eye-opening experience.

“This gave me a passion to want to help others,” he said.

He then enrolled at Immaculata and initially struggled. But with the help of people around him, he persevered.

Bittner also recently met the criteria to become a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, which honors students continuing in higher education.

He now plans to pursue his Psy.D. once he graduates.

“I have a clear sense of purpose for my life,” he said.
