Paoli-based DuckDuckGo, the Internet search engine that prioritizes the privacy of its users, has acquired the Duck.com domain from rival Google, writes Christian Hetrick for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

DuckDuckGo complained in July that Google’s use of the Duck.com domain as a redirect for its search page, was “consistently confusing DuckDuckGo users.”

This is no longer the case, as Duck.com now redirects users straight to DuckDuckGo.com.

Gabriel Weinberg, chief executive of DuckDuckGo, declined to say whether his company had paid for the domain name.

“All we can say at this time is that we’re pleased Google has chosen to transfer ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo,” he said.

Google took ownership of the Duck.com domain eight years ago after acquiring the successor of The Duck Corp. However, after DuckDuckGo complained about the web giant’s use of the domain as a redirect for its search page earlier in the year, Google changed the redirect.

The revised page allowed users to click links that led them to several duck-related sites, as well as DuckDuckGo itself, before Weinberg finally acquired the right to use the name.

According to Weinberg, “having Duck.com will make it easier for people to use DuckDuckGo.”
