The leading mushroom producer in the country, Kennett Square-based Phillips Mushroom Farms, is poised to become even bigger, writes Christina DiMartino for The Produce News.

The company is expanding its Warwick, Md., facility for the fourth time by adding 80,000 square feet. Work on the addition is expected to begin in January. Once complete, the Phillips Mushroom Farms location will be the nation’s largest single-growing facility.

According to National Sales Manager Kevin Donovan, the facility was originally envisioned to produce both conventional and organic mushrooms. The company realized several years ago that organic mushrooms would soon become big business.

“The new addition is for organic production,” said Donovan. “When completed, the facility will produce about a million pounds of mushrooms every week.”

The company is also gearing up to display its products at the New York Produce Show from Dec. 10-13 in New York City.

“We will feature our entire line of mushrooms,” said Donovan, with “emphases on our organic line.”

He said that the company has expanded its organic line over the years and now offers its major varieties with an organic option.
