It can’t be November already …

If life isn’t stressful enough, it seems that right after Halloween, the approaching Holiday season may feel like a ticking timebomb.

Will I get everything done in time, is every activity put in my calendar, how much should I spend on gifts, at whose house are we doing what?

I know that what I am going to say in this article isn’t anything you don’t already know but this year, could you actually do it? I take that as a challenge.

So, let’s break it down a little.

  1. Set a budget: Plan ahead and set a realistic budget. The sentiment behind the gift or event is more important than the cost. Even for younger children, creating holiday traditions may last longer than the gift.
  2. Keep it simple: Create a calendar and short lists and make sure you are not over planning your schedule or setting unreal expectations for yourself and everyone else. Know your limitations and don’t be afraid to say “no”. Is something an obligation or a choice?
  3. Pick your battles: Set aside your differences and agree to disagree. This is easier said than done. But if you can learn how to let go and pick your battles, you’ll have less anxiety. Don’t let the actions of others rob you of your joy.
  4. Take time for yourself: I know I may be asking for the impossible but with so much happening, you might not have a moment alone. However, it’s important to make time for yourself so you can take a breather and clear your mind. Even spending as little as 15 minutes alone might make a world of difference.

This year with so much going on in our world, so many outside influences, and so much stress and anxiety, please remember the spirit of the Holidays.

Be clear on what works for you and your loved ones this year.  Make a new tradition.
