Zack Steffen, the Downingtown West graduate who plays for Columbus Crew SC, has been named Major League Soccer’s 2018 Goalkeeper of the Year, writes Tom Bogert for MLS.

The recognition capped a breakout year for Steffen, who also competes for the U.S. national team.

The 23-year-old broke out onto the national stage in last year’s playoffs after emerging a hero in his team’s victory over Atlanta United in a penalty-kick shootout.

During the 2018 regular season, Steffen had a 1.28 GAA (goals against average) with a 64.1 save percentage. He anchored a defense that conceded only 45 goals, placing it in the top third of the league.

Steffen was also third in the league with 10 shutouts despite missing five games.

He’s only the second player in franchise history to win the award, as Brad Friedel earned Goalkeeper of the Year in 1997.
