Students, faculty, and staff at West Chester University recently filled the seats of Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall for this year’s Presidential Address, during which University President Christopher Fiorentino welcomed everyone back and implored them to take risks and fight through adversity.

During his speech, Fiorentino shared his vision of how the university can best fulfill the mission of student success. He also spoke about his time shadowing different university employees, including the directors of the Marching Band and New Student Programs, a construction foreman, the women’s softball coach, and a pair of admissions counselors.

“Beyond the fun, these job shadows have been illuminating,” Fiorentino said. “Each time, I have learned something about this university and about these employees and their job responsibilities that has informed me in my work.

“We all bring such different talents, skill sets, and personalities to our jobs.”

The occasion was also used to celebrate the accomplishments of some faculty members, present information regarding new initiatives catering to first-generation students and students with academic disabilities, and to announce the 2018-2019 winner of the WCU Civility Award.

For more than 12 years, the WCU Civility Award has been presented to one individual each year who has made an exceptional contribution to the community. This year’s winner was Tori Nuccio, Interim Associate Director of Financial Aid.

Nuccio routinely extends herself beyond her prescribed job responsibilities and has helped changed the lives of many students on campus.

Fiorentino finished the speech with a rendition of WCU’s Fight Song, wishes for a great academic year, and a reminder to always take risks.
