Chester County Briefly: October 4

Uptown! Bravo Theater

The Uptown! Bravo Theater, LLC – the investment vehicle formed to help finance the conversion of the former West Chester National Guard Armory into the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, and the actual owner of the building – has received a $225,000 check from the Univest Bank and Trust Co.

This is the result of the sale of Historic Preservation Tax credits granted to UBT by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. These credits were earned by following specific historic preservation guidelines during the rehabilitation of the Armory.

There is a provision in the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Tax program that allows the recipient to sell the credits to another entity in the event the initial recipient cannot use them. Such was the case with UBT. Twenty local companies were contacted by UBT offering the opportunity to purchase the credits, with Univest being the ultimate successful bidder.

Josh Lawrence

The Jazz Cocktail Hour at Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center

The 2018-19 season, hosted by jazz vocalist Sara Michaels, began with swagger and class, as Philadelphia celebrities V. Shayne Frederick and Ella Gahnt dazzled a sold-out crowd in September. This season is in honor of investment guru and jazz and blues scholar William E. “Bill” Donoghue, a 1959 graduate of West Chester High School.

Josh Lawrence, who sold out Uptown! last year, and his Color Theory Quartet will perform Oct. 11. He and his ensemble are introducing music from their new CD, Contrast. Exploring musical expressionism, this recording digs into the “contrast” between joy and pain. Described as a “preeminent voice among young composers,” Lawrence has received awards from the American Composers Forum, the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
