Tuesdays with Michael: A Model for Focusing Energy

The points we have been discussing extensively over the past few weeks simplify to this:

  1. We tend to move toward what we focus our attention on.
  2. When we focus our energy on the obstacles in our path, we spend time and energy dealing with those obstacles rather than on getting where we want to go.

When we are clearly focused on where we want to go, we do whatever we need to do to get there with minimal wasted energy. The big question is, where we are really going and what are we building?

You have to think about your life’s vision. What matters most to you? Think about the areas in The Wheel of Life: Spiritual and Ethical, Family and Home, Mental and Educational, Social and Cultural, Financial and Career, Physical and Health.

How can you achieve total balance and satisfaction in all areas? This will be a life-long journey and is one that we all must travel.

“Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson.

We have to change our focus from what we do not want to what we want. One way to change our focus is to ask questions. A few good questions are:

  • How can I get X?
  • How can I do X?
  • How can I be X?

Asking ourselves these types of questions helps us focus on our goals and the action steps for achieving those goals.

One final point about focusing energy is that attitude is everything. We cannot entertain negative thoughts. We lose focus and energy when we focus on what we don’t want; however, our focus gains strength when we are crystal clear on our goals and what we want to go after in life and in business. We have to believe we can achieve our goals and we will.

The language you speak to yourself and the language you speak to the world has a very powerful impact on your results. Be present. Listen to what you say to yourself; listen to your thoughts for a couple of days. What are you giving power to in your life? What are you creating a space for? Are you feeding what you want to grow inside your head? Are you planting seeds of success or failure in your head? Are you giving more power to the positive or the negative in your life and your business?

Remember: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). The language we use creates our reality. So let’s use the language of possibility and declare an all-out war on the destructive thought patterns and negative thinking. Embrace the belief of possibility.

Next week, I will discuss growing your business in a time of unprecedented change and speed.
