Tori’s Time: Should There Be a “D” in Team?

By

Happy Monday to my readers.  I came across this article written by David Paczkowski and thought it would be important to share.  Would love your feedback.

She called the consultant into the office as soon as she heard the news.  As a senior executive in the business, she had recently acquired the responsibility of restructuring a large customer service organization.   Her rise to her position had been swift.   In less than 5 years she moved from a senior operations manager position to Vice President.  Her approach and processes were credited with these moves.  She was provided the feedback to support it, and now she was making her first staffing decision for her new organization.

“I want a team that approaches thinking and problem solving like me.”   “I know this sounds narcissistic, but I’ve been told this is why I am successful and I would like you to use the MBTI and DISC assessments to help me staff my organization with people that have the same results as me.”

While tools or assessments like these can be helpful to gain communication and collaboration skills, this is an example of how they can be used incorrectly.

To staff an organization like this would be lessening the opportunity to form a team with a diverse mindset.  This enables others on the team to innovate, think differently and address blind spots that team members may overlook.  It takes intellectual diversity out of the picture.  It also removes the opportunity to develop skills outside of one’s own comfort zone.

In situations like this one, an organization should always work with credentialed professionals that can not only administer the assessment, but also aid in the interpretation and correct use of how they should be applied.
