A Smithsonian video shows how 9/11 transformed Laura Bush from a “behind-the-scenes presidential wife to the nation’s Comforter-in-Chief.”

“A First Lady who comes to the White House with a low profile is at the forefront of helping her country recover from a deep trauma,” the narrator of this Smithsonian video said of Laura Bush and the profound effect that the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 had on her.

Six days after 9/11, Bush spoke to the families of the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa.

“One magazine describes her transformation from the behind-the-scenes presidential wife to the nation’s Comforter-in-Chief,” the narrator said.

“America knows the names, but you are the people,” Bush told the victims’ loved ones. “You are the ones they thought of in the last moments of life. You’re the ones they called and prayed to see again. You’re the ones they loved.”
