A Wayne-based startup is finally giving dentists an alternative to some of the worst dental insurance plans they are forced to accept, writes Harold Brubaker for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kleer has a technology platform that gives dentists the option to offer their uninsured patients “membership” plans. The annual fee of around $300 covers two cleanings and exams, as well other services, such as routine X-rays and one emergency exam. Dentists usually discount these preventive services between 40 and 50 percent.

Fillings, crowns, root canals, and other additional treatments are made available at a discount set by dentists and not by the insurers.

According to founder and chief executive Dave Monahan, Kleer has the goal of helping both dentists and uninsured consumers.

He hopes that, with these plans, consumers will go to the dentist’s office more regularly.

“The biggest thing to me is people are more willing to accept treatment,” said Lon R. Kessler, of Kessler Dental Associates in Phoenixville. “It’s all transparent. There’s no hidden agenda.”
