After moving to New York City, journalist Kiley Bense stays connected to family in her hometown of Devon through crossword puzzles, she writes for The New York Times.

Bense, a Conestoga High School graduate, grew up watching her father do a crossword puzzle every evening. In her teenage years, she picked up the hobby as well.

Along with her father, Bense could often explode into anger when charged with emotion. At these times, crossword puzzles gave them a quiet time for bonding and shared contentment.

The Thursday crossword puzzles in the New York Times were her biggest challenge, making the moment she finally completed one very special.

“When, after many months of effort, I finally finished a Thursday for the first time, I could hardly believe it,” wrote Bense. “I was prouder of this moment than any ‘A’ on my report card.”

When she moved to New York City, crosswords became something connecting her to home and her father.

“I flip through the pages until I find the puzzle and fold the Arts section into quarters, cross my legs on the couch, and think of my dad, holding the same pose just 100 miles from here,” she wrote.
