Vanguard offers better job opportunities in finance for female portfolio managers than many Wall Street firms, according to a report from Investment News.

According to new research by Morningstar, firms with the highest share of female portfolio managers – or those with women in positions overseeing their largest or bellwether products – are not located in Manhattan.

“In ranking them, you do see quite a few firms based outside of the traditional Wall Street world, where perhaps firms have had better luck developing more women managers or it’s been more of a priority,” said Laura Pavlenko Lutton, director of Morningstar’s manager research practice for North America.

Vanguard is one of the firms with women in prominent positions. For example, Gemma Wright-Casparius heads four debt funds and co-manages another for the Malvern-based investment giant.

According to recent studies, this should be a priority for more firms. They found that when women participate in management of some of the $20 trillion Americans have in U.S. mutual funds, some of the returns go up.
