Lundale Farm, a nonprofit based in South Coventry Township, is helping women gain a foothold in the agriculture industry through farmland conservation, writes Katie Park for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Emma Kelso Cunniff is one of the women who have started operating farms in the region in recent years. She leases the seven-acre Kneehigh Farm in Pottstown from Lundale Farm.

“I think having a farm run by women with an all-women crew can be inspiring for other women who are interested in getting into agriculture,” said Cunniff.

She said that more women are starting their own farming operations, usually in sustainable, smaller-scale agriculture. However, farming is still largely a man’s world. That is why Cunniff works with two other women and other female farmers, to emphasize their work.

“It’s not just a marketing point, but a goal of the business to empower other young women in farming,” said Cunniff. “I feel that’s one of the most rewarding things for me, too, having an all-women crew and we all feel comfortable enough to fail, or to try different things.”
