New Study: Pennsylvania the Least Baby Friendly State in America

By

Pennsylvania ranks 26th among the best states to have a baby, despite being the least baby friendly state in the nation, according to an analysis recently published by WalletHub.

To determine the ranking for its 2018’s Best & Worst States to Have a Baby, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across four dimensions: Cost, Healthcare, Baby Friendliness, and Family Friendliness.

The dimensions were evaluated using 26 key metrics, including hospital delivery charges, average health-insurance premiums, the infant mortality rate, annual average cost of infant care, and the quality of women’s hospitals.

Pennsylvania had its best showing in the Cost category, where it placed fourth. The Keystone State also ranked in the upper half for Family Friendliness (18th) and in the middle for Healthcare (31st).

The analysis also placed Pennsylvania in last place for Baby Friendliness. This was measured by data such as the amount of parental leave, number of child-care centers, and birth rate.

According to WalletHub, the best state to have a baby is Vermont, while the worst is Alabama.
