Downingtown Resident Called Young, Naïve by Politician Spurred into Action

Rose Strauss

Downingtown resident Rose Strauss – called young and naïve by Scott Wagner, the Republican nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania – is turning her newfound fame into action, writes Dan Levin for The New York Times.

After an exchange in which the sophomore studying environmental science at the University of California questioned Wagner about $200,000 in campaign contributions from fossil fuel executives and lobbyists, she was tagged with #YoungAndNaive, which quickly spread on social media.

So Strauss, a member of the Sunrise Movement, an activist group of young people concerned about the environment, published an editorial in Teen Vogue vowing that “young and naïve” voters will canvass across America this summer to oust politicians who are not working for their generation.

“We knock on a lot of doors of people who disagree with us, but opening that dialogue is so important,” said Strauss.

She also said Wagner’s response didn’t upset her, but channeled her into action.

“Our generation has the power of social media,” she said. “We could take this really demeaning response and show he didn’t have it in him to answer the question.”
