Tori’s Time: The “Un-Empty” Nest?!

An estimated 85% of new college grads and 32% of adult children between the ages of 22 and 34 are moving home.  We now have a new word, the “un-empty” nest. So, it’s adulting for everyone.

Blame this trend on the $30K of student loans, the astronomical cost of renting, or the competitive need for graduate school.  Cross your fingers, everyone take a breath, and let’s have a real talk.

Don’t just drift into this arrangement. It’s time to work through some of the trickier issues.

  • Set expectations for monies. Request a budget which should include “Rent” which should be paid in a timely manner.  They are using the hot water and WIFI, they can help pay for it.
  • Adult sleepovers. Tricky subject. What is everyone comfortable with.
  • If they aren’t coming home, request a text to let someone know. It’s not a trust issue, it’s a respect issue. Parents worry.
  • Create an exit strategy. Make a plan, set a timeframe, and set a goal.

I know there are pros and cons for everyone in this arrangement but truly for the sake of everyone’s sanity and your relationships, write it down like a contract.

Yes parents, it’s your children who still look like they are sixteen in your eyes but they are adults (if you blink twice), the goal is to have them be able to work through some of this without your help.

And Young Adults, these are your parents, they are welcoming you with open arms (hopefully) and they deserve your respect.

The “un-empty” nest can be the start of a whole new relationship.
