The nation’s economy is currently in such excellent shape that it might be necessary to dig through a thesaurus to find the proper superlatives, writes Neil Irwin for The New York Times.

Job numbers for May are showing that the economy is maintaining its steady growth and keeps offering new openings on the labor market.

For the fifth month this year, the economy added 223,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, a new 18-year low.

Average hourly earnings have gone up by 0.3 percent, and are 2.7 percent higher than a year ago. Even the broader unemployment, which includes people who have given up searching for a job out of frustration, has fallen to 7.6 percent.

All in all, the economy is strong, with no immediate warning signs of an upcoming recession, or clear evidence of it either overheating or inflation creeping up.
