Vanguard is considering opening a new data center in northern Virginia, writes Joseph DiStefano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to people familiar with Vanguard’s extensive technology operations, the investment giant with almost $5 trillion in assets under management is also thinking about moving some of its team at its Malvern headquarters to the new facility.

“There are plans for a new data center, but I cannot confirm its size or location,” said Vanguard spokesman John Woerth. “I can say that the new data center offers a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility that will position the organization for continued global scalability.”

He said that Vanguard’s IT Division will continue to operate the company’s data centers from its Malvern location. But it is still being determined if a small team will be required on-site at the new location.

Vanguard currently employs 16,600 people, with 11,000 of them in Pennsylvania.

“We are investing considerable resources in people, technology, and infrastructure to protect our clients’ assets and data; to enhance fund performance; and to improve the overall investing experience at Vanguard,” said Woerth. “The new data center is part of that effort.”
