Kelly’s Sports will close its brick-and-mortar store in West Chester, but its team division will continue as part of BSN Sports, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Kelly’s, which customizes apparel for athletic teams and businesses, will shutter the retail portion of its business by July 31. Its 30,000-square-foot facility in West Chester and a nearby building will then be transferred to BSN Sports, which has acquired the Kelly’s team and its institutional business.

Full-time employees will keep their jobs after the keys are handed over to BSN, including former president and owner Steven Kelly Sr. and his son, vice president Steven Kelly Jr.

According to Kelly Sr., the company’s custom team business has been steadily growing for 15 years, but the retail side has taken a hit recently. The growth of the institutional part of the business was helped by state-of-the-art web software developed by Kelly Jr., which allows Kelly’s to deal directly with sports teams.

This also helped find a buyer for the business.

“Retail is a tough environment,” said Kelly Sr. “There was not a lot traffic walking through the front door. But we’re evolving our business and adapting to the changing world.”
