The Laundromat Library League, a West Chester-based nonprofit, is on a mission: to stock area laundromats and other sites with children’s books, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

The LLL started four years ago, and now has 215 volunteers and stocks 112 sites in 12 states, including 64 in Pennsylvania.

Carol Scott, owner of the Wash ’n Fold Laundromat in the Gay Street Plaza, has supported the organization for three years.

“(The children) gravitate toward the books and parents can do their wash because the kids are occupied,” she said.

Arlene Rengert helped create the nonprofit. The first outlet was located at Polyclean Laundromat on Hannum Avenue in West Chester.

Volunteers come from a long list of community and interfaith religious groups. They work individually and together collecting donated books, sorting and delivering the books, and setting up the libraries.

In addition to laundromats, the group places children’s books in waiting rooms and other places.

“We’re not just in laundromats,” Rengert said. “We go where people spend time. We want the kids to take books home. They can bring them back if they want. We’re trying to get the children’s books to the population of children who live in homes that may have few or no children’s books.”
