The Farmers and Mechanics Trust Co. building, at Market and High streets in the heart of West Chester, is ready to reopen after a one-year renovation, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

The six-story building dates back to 1908. It was the tallest building in the borough until the Justice Center opened in 2008.

The structure was owned by the F&M Bank that went out of business during the Great Depression in the 1920s. At one time, the building housed 70 offices. Each office had a sink and running water, which was a big selling point in 1908.

During World War II, the Civil Air Patrol manned the roof. The Daily Local News once occupied the building and Continental Bank was a long-term mainstay on the ground floor.

Current owner Tom Myles purchased the building in November 2013. During renovations, all electric, mechanical, and HVAC were replaced. The building will feature high-efficiency heat pumps and LED lighting. Original mosaic tile and interior brickwork were unearthed and will be displayed, along with walnut flooring and an exposed ceiling.
