Two political newcomers will be vying for office in Pennsylvania’s recently redrawn Sixth Congressional District, writes Brett Sholtis for WITF.

Republican Greg McCauley, a Chadds Ford resident, and Democrat Chrissy Houlahan, a Devon resident, are expected to secure their parties’ nominations in the primary election. The candidates are facing no primary opposition.

Incumbent Republican Ryan Costello decided in March to not run for re-election.

Costello was elected in 2014. He cited his two young children and disagreements with President Donald Trump and Trump supporters among the reasons he decided not to run. Costello also expressed displeasure over the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision to get an outside expert to redraw the state’s districts after it ruled that the state is “an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.”

The Sixth District has a history of electing both Democrats and Republicans as representatives, but it has remained Republican since 2002. In 2011, the GOP majority in the state legislature, with support from some Democrats, redrew the Sixth District to include parts of Berks, Chester, Montgomery, and Lebanon counties.
