Ocean Eye Inc. of Elverson has been named the Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for eastern Pennsylvania, writes Donna Rovins for the Daily Local News.

Winners of the SBA’s Small Business Awards are selected annually from nominees across Pennsylvania’s 40 eastern counties.

Ocean Eye Inc. manufactures, sells, and services commercial diving equipment, and provides training to the professional diving community, which supports the construction and repair of piers, bridges, dams, and dock facilities on the East Coast.

Among its clients are the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the FBI, engineering companies, public safety entities, and commercial construction corporations.

Chris Gable, president of Ocean Eye, has experience as both a recreational and commercial diver. Gabel started recreational SCUBA diving in 1988 while he was in the Navy.

He started Ocean Eye in 2005 in response to what he saw as a growing need to make professional diving safer.

“There are very few places to take equipment for repairs,” Gable said, “and I wanted to make a change to the industry and make it safer.”

When the company started, it occupied 600 square feet of office space. Today, it occupies 6,000 square feet across two buildings in Elverson.
