The number of Philadelphia-area “super commuters” – people who travel more than 90 minutes to get to work each day – is on the rise, writes Shannon Rooney for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

One in 34 commuters in the Philadelphia area spends more than 90 minutes getting to work, according to a report from Apartment List. The report says 2.9 percent of all local commuters have super commutes and that the share of Philadelphia super commuters has risen 11.8 percent since 2005.

Super commuters also are more likely to rely on public transportation than private vehicles, the report said.

The Philadelphia-area numbers are similar to national numbers.

Nationwide, one in 36 commuters travels more than 90 minutes to get to work each day. As of 2016, 2.8 percent of all commuters were making the 90-plus-minute commute each way. The share of super commuters has risen 15.9 percent nationwide since 2005.

Apartment List, and other sources, attribute this development to soaring housing costs. If people can’t afford to live in or close to the expensive urban core where they work, they are more likely to move farther out and commute longer distances.
