Congressman Ryan Costello, right, visits Seven Stars Farm, owned by Mark Dunphy, in Phoenixville.

A new bill being introduced by Congressman Ryan Costello aims to help people trying to get a foothold in agriculture, writes Michael Rellahan for the Daily Local News.

The Young and Beginning Farmers Act will help new farmers with access to land and grants. It will also provide assistance with local food systems.

The bipartisan legislation would expedite the loan application process at the U.S. Department of Agriculture for young farmers to secure farmland. It will also provide funding for the promotion of local food programs, including farmers markets, and extend the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program that provides grants for education and mentoring purposes.

“This legislation is vital to the success of young farmers and ranchers in our region and around the country, as it addresses three critical barriers facing the next generation of producers,” wrote a group of farmers in their thank-you letter to Costello.

The bill was referred to the House Committee on Agriculture in November.

“The success and future of our farm communities depends on these farmers having the necessary resources and opportunity to thrive and succeed,” said Costello.
