Based on the West Goshen Sustainability Task Force’s recommendation, the Township Board of Supervisors has approved a motion to pursue Tree City USA accreditation, writes Bill Rettew for the Daily Local News.

Once the national recognition is granted, West Goshen will become Chester County’s first accredited Tree City USA Township. It will join the Borough of West Chester, which has been a member for several years.

Tree City USA is funded by the Arbor Day Foundation, which sponsors the program in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

West Goshen will receive Tree City USA recognition after meeting the four requirements set by the program. These include the establishment of a tree board or department, enactment of tree-care ordinance, a minimum forestry budget of $2 per capita, and a celebration of Arbor Day.

The date and location of its first Arbor Day will be announced soon.

“Preserving our trees is important not only for the environment, but gives us a sense of place in our community,” said Ashley Gagné, a member of the task force.
