West Chester University’s annual Banana Day is a student rite of spring that features the doling out of more than 3,000 free bananas at almost every corner of campus, peeling around corners in banana and gorilla costumes, and competing in banana-themed games to win coveted Banana Day t-shirts.

WCU’s Student Activities Council submitted a video of the university’s 22-year-old ritual to “Your Best Campus Tradition,” an annual competition sponsored by the National Association for Campus Activities, and it won first place among universities that enroll 5,000-plus students.

The award was recently presented to WCU’s Student Activities Council during the 2018 NACA Convention in Boston.

A great stress-reducer for students prior to exams, Banana Day was founded in 1996 by WCU alumnus Rodolfo “Rudy” Tellez, who organized the distribution of thousands of bananas across campus as a way to celebrate school spirit.

This year’s banana festivities will be held throughout campus on Wednesday, April 18.
