New Garden Township is looking to purchase a 137-acre property in Avondale put up for sale by St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, writes Patricia Talorico for the Wilmington News Journal.

The township is currently the only buyer for the property just off Limestone Road. The plans for the property, which used to be a retreat and recreational facility, include demolishing some of the buildings and using the land as a preserve or public park.

During a recent meeting of the township’s Board of Supervisors, officials confirmed their interest, but did not disclose how much they are willing to pay for it.

Attorney Vincent M. Pompo said that, at this time in the process, the township does not have a sales agreement for the property but does have a letter of intent.

The money to buy the property would come from an open space fund that currently has $1.97 million.

“At this point in time, we’re in negotiations,” said Chairman Randy T. Geouque. “We have an idea of the maximum we want to spend.”
