VISTA Market: Space-Saving Docks Add Ports to Increasingly Lighter Portable Computers

By

With portable computers relying more and more on cloud storage and wireless connections, the number of built-in ports has reduced drastically. This often results in only having a headphone jack and a pair of USB ports available, writes J. D. Biersdorfer for The New York Times.

But while laptop manufacturers and other vendors sell cost efficient USB-C adapters that can connect HDMI cables or read SD memory cards, a better option is a multiport USB-C dock or USB-C hub.

Stone’s 10 ports, available on Amazon.com, connect a MacBook to existing devices while charging the computer from one, single connection.

While higher in price, having a dock or hub simplifies matters as all your devices can connect at the same time, even when you only have one USB port.

The best way to decide on the right one is to list all of the connections you need, then search for a suitable model.

For example, if you need a dock that can connect both HDMI and an SD card, one option is the $50 OWC USB-C Travel Dock.

A bigger, but more expensive choice at $200 is the Henge Stone dock that includes several additional ports.

With so many options available, you will soon find something that perfectly fits your needs.
