Mushrooms Consumed from Philadelphia to Phoenix Were Most Likely Grown Here
Mushrooms from Kennett Square, the Mushroom Capital of the World, will be showcased during the 102nd Pennsylvania Farm Show from Jan. 6-13 in Harrisburg, according to a report in the Daily Local News.
Visitors will get the chance to meet the state’s mushroom farmers, find out about the mushroom growing process, pick mushrooms, and do much more in the popular “mush-room” in the Main Hall.
While White Button mushrooms are the most popular, generating nearly $560 million in sales for Pennsylvania farms, mushroom growers across the state produce many other varieties. Specialty mushrooms, like Shiitake and Oyster, brought in more than $96 million in sales last year, with Pennsylvania farmers making up for a large portion of those sales.
“From Philadelphia to Phoenix, chances are if you eat mushrooms on your pizza, in your salads, or as part of your burgers, they come from Pennsylvania mushroom farms,” said Lori Harrison, communications manager for the
Mushroom Farmers of Pennsylvania, a voluntary group based in Avondale that represents the state’s growers, processors, and marketers of cultivated mushrooms.
