This past Tuesday, more than 75 people gathered at West Chester University’s Graduate Business Center to learn how to successfully pitch to investors and prepare to attend the annual Angel Venture Fair (AVF) in May 2018.  The AVF is the largest gathering of angel investors and entrepreneurs in the mid-Atlantic region, having showcased more than 500 companies over the last 19 years.

Over 75 participants attended the Inaugural AVF Education Workshop “In the Burbs.”

The Angel Venture Fair Educational Workshop was jointly presented by West Chester University’s Dr. Edwin Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center and the Chester County Economic Development Council’s Ideas x Innovation Network (i2n) and was sponsored by Meridian Bank and moderated by AVF’s Marc Kramer.

AVF workshops have been a 20-year institution in Philadelphia, drawing crowds between 100-200 annually.  Tuesday’s event was the inaugural offering in the “burbs” and targeted local emerging tech companies, professional resource providers, and educators.

“This workshop directly supports CCEDC and the County’s VISTA goal to enhance the ecosystem of resources available in our County to support innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Nancy Kunkle, Project Director for Technology Programs at CCEDC.

The workshop featured two panels with recognized experts in the region providing legal and investor strategies for startups to consider when pitching their companies to investors.  “Preparing an effective pitch is difficult but essential to raising capital,” said Dr. Monica Zimmerman, WCU Professor and Director of the Cottrell Center.

Three startup founders seeking investment funding provided presentations and received feedback from the experts. Their presentations also helped all entrepreneurs learn what investors are looking for when making a decision to invest.

Chester County’s Commissioners were also in attendance and announced their new venture fund between the County of Chester and Ben Franklin Technology Partners called Venture Chesco.
