Enthusiasm, Concern Among Reactions as Region Makes Amazon’s Short List

By

Reaction to the news that Greater Philadelphia is one of the 20 cities/regions on Amazon’s short list for its second headquarters has run the gamut from enthusiasm to concern, writes Alison Burdo for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The city’s government officials shared their thrilled responses to the decision. This included Mayor Jim Kenney, who credited the broad coalition of people who supported Philadelphia’s bid for making it into Round Two. The city’s partners, including those who worked on the #PhillyDelivers campaign, also expressed their joy over the decision.

With Pennsylvania as the only state with two cities on the list, Gov. Tom Wolf also tweeted his pride that the Keystone State seems like a prime location for Amazon’s second home.

However, not everyone was equally as happy over the news.

Some residents expressed concern over the impact Amazon HQ2 could have on city housing. Others used the opportunity to ask Mayor Kenney to act on his previous promises, while some asked for the process to be completely transparent, so everybody could fully understand the cost-benefits of the deal.

Meanwhile, some residents took the whole process less seriously, jokingly wondering if Amazon’s HQ2 would speed up delivery of packages to the area.
