Chester County Deputy Sheriff Paul Bryant and his K-9 partner Don form a cadaver search team to help the loved ones of deceased victims find closure.

Bryant has worked in the K-9 cadaver search field for 20 years out of his more than three decades in law enforcement. His career got a second life in 2015 when he retired from the Philadelphia Police Department and was immediately scooped up by Chester County Sheriff Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh.

Welsh first heard Bryant’s name mentioned in relation to K-9 training. She then met him by chance at a Chester County memorial service a couple of years before Bryant decided to leave the Philadelphia Police Department.

“When you’re ready to retire, come out and see me,” Welsh recalled telling him.

Welsh, who started the Chester County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit in 2006 with two dogs trained in explosives detection, was at that time eager to expand it.

And while Bryant believed he was finished with police work, he could not resist the chance to assist with Welsh’s ambitious expansion plan. Since his addition, the K-9 Unit has added cadaver search and created an in-house training program.
