Local Politicians Fete WCU’s National Championship-Winning Baseball Team

State Senators Andy Dinniman and Robert “Tommy” Tomlinson recently recognized the West Chester University baseball team, which last spring won the NCAA Division II title, the program’s second national championship in six years.

“You did a monumental job, and you made the entire community proud,” Dinniman said. “And you did it by working together. After all, the only way to win is by being a team. You may have different jobs, but you all have one goal.”

Dinniman and Tomlinson met with players and coaches, who each received a special citation in honor of the milestone, during a ceremony at the university’s Phillips Autograph Library.

Tomlinson, a WCU graduate and member of the university’s Board of Trustees, reflected on his own athletic career as captain of the Golden Rams football team in 1969.

“I’ve always said that the football field or the baseball field is like a classroom,” he said. “You learn discipline and teamwork, and the camaraderie you enjoy as a team will last a lifetime. It’s a great achievement and something you will remember the rest of your lives.”

WCU is still the only school from Pennsylvania to win a baseball national championship at any level and the only institution in the northeast U.S. to win a baseball national title at the Division I or II levels.
