Certified Athletic Trainers from West Chester University are closely monitoring NFL games to ensure that players with possible concussions are immediately removed from the field, writes Bill Rettew Jr. for the Daily Local News.

Scott Heinerichs, WCU’s Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Neil Curtis, Coordinator of Athletic Training Education, and alumnus Joe Iezzi all work as spotters for the NFL.

Their job is real-time monitoring for injuries as a game is being played.

“We look for any head or neck injuries we might see from up above the press box, and call down to the trainer and doctors with a name and jersey number,” said Iezzi.

They also review hits using live feed and replay to tag all types of injuries, which are then presented to the teams after the game. According to the NFL, spotters on average tag around 10 injuries per game.

“We’re just another layer of safety,” said Heinerichs.
