West Goshen’s Nick and Jeanette Vita exchanged marriage vows 70 years ago and have been going strong ever since, thanks to determination and a promise they would never divorce, writes Fran Maye for Lancaster Online.
Nick was 21 when he met 16-year-old Jeanette at a dance. In the blink of an eye, the young couple fell in love. However, Jeanette’s mother worried that their marriage would never work out due to the combination of Jeanette’s Irish upbringing and Nick’s Italian background.
But Nick still managed to gain Jeanette’s mother’s approval, and shortly after Jeanette turned 18, they got married.
“There have been times he wanted to get rid of me and I wanted to get rid of him, but we just say no, we love each other and we are determined to stay together,” said Jeanette.
She added that in today’s society, most people opt to live together instead of getting married, so they can simply leave if they don’t like it.
“But you have to stick it out and try,” she said. “Sometimes, it’s very, very hard.”
