A handful of locals are in the midst of having their athletic dreams come true.

Conestoga High School graduate Brendon Little, Garnet Valley product Andrew Bechtold, Devon Prep alum Zach Schellenger, Coatesville senior Adam Stauffer, and West Chester Henderson graduate Chas McCormick were recently selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.

Little, a left-handed pitcher who began his collegiate career at North Carolina before transferring to the State College of Florida, was a first-round pick, chosen 27th overall by the Chicago Cubs. He was the first junior-college player taken in the draft, and his fastball tops out at 97 mph.

The Minnesota Twins picked Bechtold, an infielder, in the fifth round, 136th overall. After transferring from the University of Maryland, the Chadds Ford native recently led Florida’s Chipola College to the NJCAA World Series.

Meanwhile, Schellenger, a righthanded pitcher who grew up in Malvern, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round, 191st overall. He just concluded his junior season at Seton Hall after dazzling in the Cape Cod Summer League. In high school, Schellenger helped lead Devon Prep to the PIAA Class A title in 2014.

Stauffer, who just finished his high school career and has a college commitment to St. John’s, was selected in the 19th round, 578th overall, by the Baltimore Orioles. He’s a 6-foot-7, 240-pound pitcher.

The Houston Astros picked McCormick, a senior outfielder at Millersville, in the 21st round, 631st overall.
