Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation

The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation recently held its annual luncheon at the West Chester Golf & Country Club.

The foundation connects two graduating seniors from each of the three West Chester Area School District high schools with mentors from chamber-member businesses in the students’ fields of interest.

In keeping with the chamber’s mission, students are selected for their entrepreneurship and connection to the community. All six students are awarded scholarships from the foundation.

Scholarship recipients were:

  • Garrett Kenny (Rustin and TCHS), who studied business management and marketing and was mentored by Bill Ronayne, owner of Brandywine Valley HVAC
  • Leila Katz Boyd (East and TCHS), who studied criminal justice and police sciences and was mentored by Dr. Michele Bratina, assistant professor of criminal justice at West Chester University
  • Grace Gill (Henderson and TCHS), who studied cosmetology and was mentored by Dan Cosgrove, general manager at La Difference Salon & Day Spa
  • Michael Mowery (East), who studied finance and accounting and was mentored by Matthew Lagoy of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC

The Malvern Community Arts Project, a one-woman volunteer organization operating under the town’s Business & Professional Association, has released details of its seventh community-funded project, entitled “Arts on the Lawn.”

The project, located on the lawn space behind the Malvern Public Library/Borough Hall, will feature life-size dog statues painted in a pop-art style, new Adirondack chairs and picnic tables, and the potential for additional landscape design.

With the goal of becoming a casual outdoor reading and picnic space, the project is called “Arts of the Lawn,” because it involves four forms of art (nature, figures, painting, and literature).

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to transform unused public space into a true community place for reading, relaxing, or gathering together,” said Kristin Thomas, founder of the Malvern Community Arts Project.

West Chester Railroad

Sunday picnic outings on the West Chester Railroad fits those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer made famous by the Nat King Cole song.

“Having a picnic while riding the rails of the old Pennsylvania Railroad West Chester branch is a perfect family outing,” said Dave Walter, treasurer and historian of the West Chester Railroad Heritage Association. “The relaxing 90-minute rides allow passengers to see the scenic countryside and spend some quality time with family members before starting the work week.”

The Summer Picnic Specials run every Sunday from June 4 until Sept. 17 at noon from the West Chester station at 230 East Market Street. Picnic lunches are available for purchase. Riders can also bring along their own meals. Tickets cost $15.00 for adults, $13.00 for children ages 2-12 and those under 2 ride free.

“As we move into our second quarter century, we recognize that the world is rapidly changing, and we look forward to the challenges ahead. As the world changes, we will be needed to design those changes, while continuing to protect the environment around us.”
