Berwyn-based hard plastics maker Trinseo is softening up a bit with an $82 million purchase of Italian soft plastics maker Applicazioni Plastiche Industriali SpA, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Joseph DiStefano.

Trinseo, the former Dow Chemical Co. unit previously known as Styron, is famous for making LEGOs, smartphone cases, and more. Now it will also be able to make thermoplastic elastomeric compounds and bioplastics, many of which are already inserted into or attached to products made by Trinseo, the article stated.

“Trinseo’s rigid plastics have a very strong position in automotive, medical, and consumer markets,” said Senior Vice President Hayati Yarkadas. “API’s soft-touch TPE products are often used together with rigid plastics in similar applications, so the combination of Trinseo and API will benefit customers.

“The potential for the combined product offering, as well Trinseo’s global presence to bring API products into new geographies, means that this powerhouse portfolio of Performance Plastics will be an engine for growth in Trinseo.”
