Famous Author Running for Seat on Kennett School Board

By

Mark Bowden

Mark Bowden, the author of a number of widely read books, including Black Hawk Down and Killing Pablo, is vying for a seat on the Kennett Consolidated School District Board, writes Fran Maye for the Daily Local News.

A resident of Kennett Square for two years after moving to the borough from outside of Oxford, Bowden is looking to fill the open seat on the nine-member board.

Currently serving as the University of Delaware’s Distinguished Writer in Residence, Bowden has also worked as a professor at Loyola University, his alma mater in Baltimore. His wife Gail is a board member for The Bayard Taylor Memorial Library in Kennett Square.

“I have five children of my own who went to public schools, and I have a real interest in public schools,” Bowden said.

A prolific wordsmith, Bowden has written extensively on Pablo Escobar, Saddam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden. He’s a frequent contributor to both Vanity Fair and The Atlantic magazines, and was a reporter and columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer for two decades.

“I care about the schools, and I care about the community,” he said. “I bring a lot of experience, working with young people and having been a teacher.”
