As his turbulent baseball career winds down, pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, a graduate of Octorara High School, recently made his spring training debut for the Minnesota Twins, writes Rhett Bollinger for MLB.com.

Vogelsong, a former All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the San Francisco Giants, has traveled the world during his roller-coaster career, which includes stints with two different franchises in Japan.

At 39, he’ll now try to prolong his career by securing a spot in the Twins’ starting rotation.

Vogelsong’s return to the game was not a given, however, after he was hit in the face by a 92-mph fastball that fractured his orbital bone. He’s considered lucky to have regained his full vision, and he still believes he can make a difference on the mound.

“I love to compete,” said Vogelsong, who was drafted in the fifth round out of Kutztown University. “I think talking to guys who are done, it’s hard to replace that. I love being around the guys. I just love the game.”
